The three modes, worked out
Each mode is a short exact calculation. Here is what the tool does behind each one:
What is 15% of 80? → 80 × 15 ÷ 100 = 12.
12 is what percent of 50? → 12 ÷ 50 × 100 = 24%.
Percentage change from 40 to 50? → (50 − 40) ÷ 40 × 100 = +25% (a negative result would mean a decrease).
Frequently asked questions
- Which number goes on top for 'what percent is X of Y'?
- The part you are asking about goes on top: X ÷ Y × 100. If 18 of 60 people said yes, that is 18 ÷ 60 × 100 = 30%. Swapping them gives the wrong answer.
- What is the difference between percentage points and percent?
- They differ. A rate rising from 4% to 6% is a 2 percentage-point rise, but a 50% increase relative to the starting 4%. Mixing them up is a common source of misleading claims.
