It won't undo JPEG's damage — and that's important
The single most common misunderstanding: converting JPG to PNG does not restore quality. JPEG permanently threw away detail when it compressed, and moving to PNG cannot invent it back. The PNG shows the exact same pixels, JPEG artefacts and all.
What you gain is a lossless container going forward. From this point on, saving and re-saving the PNG won't degrade it the way repeatedly re-saving a JPG would — useful if you're about to do a lot of editing.
Troubleshooting
- The PNG is far bigger than the JPG.
- Expected. PNG is lossless and stores every pixel, so a compact JPG photo can balloon into a much larger PNG. If size matters more than lossless editing, stay with JPG or use WebP.
- The background still isn't transparent.
- A JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG starts fully opaque. PNG can hold transparency, but you have to erase or cut out the background yourself in an editor — the conversion doesn't add any.

- When you'll edit the image repeatedly (PNG won't degrade per save), when a tool or platform requires PNG, or when you plan to add transparency next. For simply viewing or sharing a photo, the JPG is smaller and just as good.

- No. The JPG is decoded and re-encoded entirely in your browser, so it never leaves your device.
