Shrinks the image to at most 1000 KB
One megabyte is a generous target, and that's the good news: at this size a high-resolution photo can keep excellent quality. Lots of upload forms, CMS platforms, and email systems cap attachments at 1MB, and getting a large camera photo just under that line usually costs almost nothing you can see. The tool typically only nudges the JPEG quality down a little, re-checking until the file is at or just under 1MB — all on a canvas in your browser, so even large photos stay on your device.
Frequently asked questions
- Will a photo lose much quality at 1MB?
- Usually very little. One megabyte is a large budget for a single image, so the encoder keeps most detail and colour. Bringing a several-megabyte camera photo under 1MB often produces no difference you'd notice at normal viewing size.
- Why would an already-small image not shrink much?
- If your photo is already well under 1MB, there's nothing to do — the tool won't inflate it, and it's already within the cap. Compression only helps when the original is heavier than the target.
- Is 1MB good for printing?
- For screen and web, 1MB is plenty. Large, high-quality prints generally want more data, so keep an uncompressed original for printing and use the 1MB version for uploads and sharing.
