An XML sitemap is a machine-readable list of the URLs you want search engines to know about. This tool crawls a starting URL, follows internal links, and assembles a valid sitemap.xml — following the sitemaps.org schema so any search engine can read it — that you download and submit to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
A sitemap aids discovery; it doesn't force indexing. It especially helps larger sites and pages that aren't well linked internally, because it gives crawlers a direct list rather than relying on them finding every page by following links.
Two limits worth knowing
- The crawl only finds pages reachable by following internal links from your start URL. Orphan pages with no links pointing to them, and anything behind a form or login, won't be discovered — a useful signal about your internal linking.
- A single sitemap file is capped at 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed by the standard. Very large sites split into multiple sitemaps referenced by a sitemap index file.
How to use it
- Enter your site's starting URL, usually the homepage, and begin the crawl.
- The tool follows internal links and collects the reachable URLs.
- Download the sitemap.xml, upload it to your root, reference it in robots.txt, and submit it in Search Console.
Frequently asked questions
- Does a sitemap guarantee my pages get indexed?
- No. It helps search engines discover URLs, but they decide independently what to crawl and index based on quality, links, and crawl budget. It improves discovery, not inclusion.
- How often should I regenerate it?
- Whenever your set of URLs changes meaningfully — new or removed pages, or a restructure. Regenerating after a batch of changes keeps the list accurate.
