BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so there are no compression artefacts to trip up the recognition — a clean bitmap scan is one of the easier things for OCR to read. The whole process runs in your browser with Tesseract, so the file is never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
- Do BMP files read well with OCR?
- Yes, generally. Because BMP is uncompressed, the letter edges are exactly as the scanner captured them, with no compression noise for the engine to misinterpret. Resolution and contrast still matter more than the format itself.
- Why are my BMP files so large, and does that matter?
- BMP stores every pixel with no compression, so a page-sized scan can be tens of megabytes. It doesn't hurt accuracy, but the browser needs a moment to load all those pixels before it can read them.
- Should I convert BMP to PNG first?
- No need — the OCR reads BMP directly, and converting to a lossless PNG wouldn't change the pixels or the accuracy. It would only make the file smaller.
- Which languages are supported?
- Latin-script text by default. Other scripts need their own trained data, which isn't loaded, so they won't be recognised accurately.
